The use of glass in architecture in Caracas
As in any other city, in Caracas the main use of glass is in windows. As a window, glass becomes one of the most important architectural element in the design of any project. The reason why it is so important, in Caracas, is that the climate of this city is warm so windows are needed in order to ventilate. Nevertheless, glass is being used in other ways more aesthetic than functional in some buildings nowadays. The tallest buildings in Caracas tend to use more glass than smaller constructions for two causes: first of all, using tons of glass in windows decreases the energy costs of ventilation in many ways; second of all, glass helps to create beautiful and modern facades. Obviously, too many windows in tall buildings, if they are not well used, could make the place hotter, that is why I mentioned glass is being used for artistic purposes rather than functional. We can see these facades compositions with glass in Parque Cristal, The Four Seasons Hotel, Banesco, Parque Central an many other buildings. In short, glass is used in Caracas mainly for windows, but also for bigger surfaces in order to construct modern facades, sometimes even colored.
